Goldsmid, Isaac Lyon

(1778-1859)
   English communal leader. In his business life he financed railway construction. Prominent in the struggle for Jewish emancipation in England, he was one of the founders of University College, London. He also played a role in the establishment of the Reform synagogue. He was made a baronet in 1841 and in 1846 he was created Baron de Palmeira by the King of Portugal.
